Birth of Mountain Gorillas

NewsPosted by Evert Jakobs Sat, June 05, 2010 13:46:50
The staff at the Karisoke Research Center monitored two new births on June 1, in two different groups that they protect. They had a close look at both infants and they are doing well at this time.

Mother Umuco is 20 years old, and mother Ikaze is only 8-1/2 years old. We are waiting for photos but newborns are so small they are hard to see against the mother's body.

The traditional Rwandan gorilla infant naming ceremony takes place in Rwanda on June 5. Called "Kwitz Izina," it is the time when names are chosen for all the gorilla infants born during the past year. Karisoke staff and various celebrities will be among the participants.

Nyungwe waterfall pours its water in Europe

Side newsPosted by Evert Jakobs Thu, May 13, 2010 11:56:11

Nyungwe forest is one of the many impressing touristic attractions in Rwanda.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is a national park in southwestern Rwanda, located south of Lake Kivu on the border with Burundi. The park was established in 2004 and covers an area of approximately 970 km² of rainforest, bamboo, grassland, swamps, and bogs. The nearest town is Cyangugu, 54 km to the west. Mount Bigugu is located within the park borders.

One of the richest mountain primate communities in Africa became a national park on March 3, 2004. Home to chimpanzees, Angolan black-and-white colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and other primates, the Nyungwe National Park covers 970 square kilometers of rainforest, bamboo, grassland, swamps, and bogs in the mountains of Rwanda. In all, the new park boasts 13 different primate species, 260 bird species, and over 260 different types of trees and shrubs. Nyungwe became a forest reserve in 1933 when the surrounding land began to be cleared for farming. Now, over seventy years later, the government of Rwanda has made the reserve a national park. Nyungwe and the neighboring Kibira National Park in Burundi, to the south, together form the largest track of rainforest in eastern Africa.

Nyungwe has a wide diversity of animal species, making it a priority for conservation in Africa. The forest is situated in a region where several large-scale biogeographical zones meet and the variety of terrestrial biomes provide a great span of microhabitats for many different species of plants and animals.

The park contains 13 different primate species (25% of Africa's total), 275 bird species, 1068 plant species, 85 mammal species, 32 amphibian and 38 reptile species. Many of these animals are restricted-range species that are only found in the Albertine Rift ecoregion in Africa. In fact, the number of endemic species found here is greater than in any other forest in the Albertine Rift that has been surveyed.

Primate species

  • Common Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes)
  • Adolf Friedrich's Angola Colobus (Colobus angolensis ruwenzori)
  • L'Hoest's Monkey (Cercopithecus l'hoesti)
  • Silver Monkey (Cercopithecus doggetti)
  • Golden Monkey (Cercopithecus kandti)
  • Hamlyn's Monkey (Cercopithecus hamlyni)
  • Red-tailed Monkey (Cercopithecus ascanius)
  • Dent's Mona Monkey (Cercopithecus denti)
  • Vervet Monkey (Chlorocebus pygerythrus)
  • Olive Baboon (Papio anubis)
  • Grey-cheeked Mangabey (Lophocebus albigena)

Loving Rwanda can be the reason for some people to do funny things in order to feel connected to the beautiful landscapes in Rwanda.

The pictures here show you one of the beautiful waterfalls in Nyungwe and form the background of an artificial pond in a garden in The Netherlands. Soon the climbing plants will cover the frame around it, thus creating an overwhelming memory of Rwanda.

Rwanda wins again at ITB Berlin 2010

NewsPosted by Evert Jakobs Sun, March 14, 2010 09:53:30

BERLIN - Rwanda, yesterday, made history by being the first country to win — four times in a row — the Best African Exhibitor Award at the annual International Tourism Trade Fair in Berlin (ITB Berlin).

It has maintained the winning position at the world’s largest tourism fair since 2007.

Rwanda’s Ambassador to Germany, Christine Nkulikiyinka, welcomed the announcement that Rwanda had once again topped the line-up in the exhibition that attracted thousands of participants drawn from all over the world.

“This means a great deal for us to win this award again, because we are the only country that has won it this many consecutively,” Nkulikiyinka told The Sunday Times yesterday.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), John Gara, described the development as yet another testimony to the immense potential of Rwanda’s tourism industry.

“Winning this award will definitely boost travellers’ confidence in coming to Rwanda. Other areas of diversification that we are looking at include; conference tourism, birding, and cultural tourism,” he said.
